What is the Provencal style
The Provencal style, as stated earlier, is one that makes direct reference to Provence, the southern region of France.
It was the local artisans, between the 16th and 17th centuries, who built what we know today as a style of decoration. With the intention of resembling the nobility of the time, the peasants started to build furniture with the same characteristics as those found in the palaces. However, the lack of resources forced them to use inferior wood and, over time, fatally became worn out.
Without them being able to imagine, this naturally worn feature of wood would become the basis of the Provencal decoration that we love so much.
Characteristics of Provencal cuisine
Rustic and aged-looking furniture
Nothing more Provencal than white furniture with an aged appearance. But it's not just white furniture and cabinets that you can make your Provencal kitchen. Light tones of wood, off White, gray and pastel blue are also welcome for the Provencal kitchen furniture.
To guarantee the rustic and aged appearance of the furniture you can count on the effects of patina, craquelê and decoupage. Both old furniture and new furniture can receive these techniques.
In addition to the rustic appearance, Provencal furniture also usually brings frames around doors and drawers. Another feature of these furniture is the handles. The most common are ball-shaped ones, usually made of wood or porcelain, but you can still opt for those in the shape of a handle or shell.
To complete the Provencal appearance of the kitchen, bet on a wooden or stone countertop, such as granite or marble, preferably in light and soft tones.
Soft, neutral colors
You may have already noticed that light, neutral and pastel colors are the most used in the decoration of the Provencal kitchen. White is what stands out the most and is usually the basis of the project. But the pastel shades of blue, yellow and pink are not left out of this style.
Those who prefer a modern Provencal kitchen decor can opt for shades of gray and even black, slightly breaking the romanticism and delicacy of the Provencal style.
The color palette is very important to guarantee the Provencal style. The different shades chosen will be used in every corner of the kitchen, from the walls, the ceiling and the floor, to the cabinets and small decorative objects.
And speaking of decorative objects, it is worth betting on pieces of copper or aged gold that combine very well with the Provencal proposal.
Floral prints
It is impossible to talk about Provencal cuisine without mentioning the floral prints. This is one of the biggest characteristics of this style. You can bet on floral prints on tablecloths, tea towels, curtains, wallpapers, napkins and even on the upholstery of chairs.
But preferably for prints with soft tones and delicate flowers.
Crockery on display
Another great charm of Provencal kitchens is porcelain. So do not hesitate for a minute to display cups, plates and other porcelain crockery. A good tip is to use shelves to accommodate these utensils. Incidentally, it is worth mentioning that the shelves are another great brand of Provencal style.
Retro objects
The Provencal style is also closely linked to the vintage and retro universe. For this reason, it is not uncommon to see old pieces making their presence felt in this type of decoration. Clocks, appliances and crockery are some of the pieces in retro style that you can take to the Provencal kitchen.
Flowers and plants
In addition to the floral prints you can and should also invest in potted plants and flowers around the kitchen. The beautiful and fragrant lavender are the face of Provencal decoration, but other species can also compose your project.
