Find Out What You Should Do About It

Per Redaction – Updated:

Just when you think you’re feeling good at home, the fridge comes out leaking water. Yeah, there’s no way.

Now or another, the household equipment can present problems and it is part of the house maintenance routine to leave it 100% new.

But how to solve this? Can you fix a refrigerator leaking water? Call the bucket? What to do?

And that’s what we’re going to help you answer in this post. Come on!

Where does the water come from?

Before you want to solve the problem, you need to find out where this water is coming from.

In older refrigerators, those that do not have a frost free system, this water is probably coming from underneath.

In this case, you will most likely notice a puddle of water on the floor just below the appliance. It is also common to notice that the rubber in the refrigerator is wet.

However, in the case of newer refrigerators, in frost free models, this leak happens inside.

It is very common for water leakage to appear on the inside side walls of the device.

In both cases, however, the problem is usually the same: clogging of the reservoir.

Here’s what you can do to solve the problem of a refrigerator leaking water.

Refrigerator leaking water from underneath

A refrigerator leaking water from underneath usually indicates that the drain hose is clogged.

Located on the lower rear part of the appliance, this drain, when clogged, cannot make the passage of water. And what happens? The reservoir fills and overflows, making that mess on the kitchen floor.

To resolve this, however, is simple. First confirm if it is the case of a clogged drain, ok?

Then unplug the refrigerator and defrost your refrigerator. At the end of this process and with the help of a wire or other fine pointed object, try to unclog the drain.

Only that! Do not use any type of chemical that could damage your appliance.

Take the opportunity and check all valves and connections, ensuring that there are no cracks, cracks or fissures in these parts. If you find any problem, replace it.

When in doubt, take the refrigerator instruction manual with you to the store to make sure you are buying the correct replacement part.

Also check the reservoir tray and replace it if it is damaged.

Another important tip: make sure your refrigerator is aligned, that is, at the right level. If it is slightly tilted, the water accumulates and leaks out before evaporating.

To make this finding, use a bricklayer level. If the refrigerator is out of alignment, move it to a regular floor or place it on a wedge.

Put the refrigerator back to work. In a few hours you will know if the procedure worked or not.

If the problem persists, call a specialized technician to provide you with a more complete diagnosis and thus find the solution.

Frost free versions of refrigerators often suffer from leaks on the inside.

Most of the time, ice buildup is what causes the drain to clog. The solution here is even simpler than the previous one.

That’s because you just have to defrost the refrigerator completely, so that all the ice present in it melts, thus releasing the water drain.

Another way to solve the problem, if the previous one did not work, is to unclog the drain manually.

In that case, start by unplugging the refrigerator. Remove the food that is inside the appliance, except those that are in the door.

Then locate the water reservoir. It’s usually behind the vegetable drawer. So, just remove the drawer to access it.

The next step is to unclog the drain. Do this using a thin, stiff wire or other material that can be inserted into the reservoir.

Insert the plunger until you feel that the dirt has been removed. Remove the plunger.

Next, fill a syringe with warm water and inject it into the reservoir.

Return everything to its place, turn the refrigerator back on and see if the problem is resolved.

If not, seek technical assistance for the device.

Refrigerator leaking water: tips to help solve the problem

Refrigerator leaking water: tips to help solve the problem

  • Always consult the refrigerator’s instruction manual to ensure you are accessing the correct parts and components. When in doubt, it is better not to move and call a qualified professional.
  • If you notice that the refrigerator is leaking water from the top, consult technical assistance. This type of leak can indicate something more serious in the appliance and includes, among other things, the removal of the refrigerator panel and the repair should only be done by authorized technicians.
  • If your refrigerator has an eco-mode or energy-saving option, then the problem may be there. That’s because, in this mode, the refrigerator turns off the heaters responsible for evaporating the water, causing it to accumulate and leak. Disable this mode on the device, wait a few hours and check if the problem is resolved.
  • Some refrigerator models have a hose connection at the rear for water supply. If this hose is fitted incorrectly or the hose is dry, damaged or cracked, leakage can also occur. In these cases, make sure that the connection record is well sealed.
  • If the refrigerator is within the warranty period, avoid making repairs yourself. Any damage caused in an attempt to repair may be enough to make you lose your warranty. The best thing, in these cases, is to call the authorized technical assistance at the first indication of a problem.

Did you manage to solve the drama of the refrigerator leaking water? So now you can go back to your peace!
